Pollen is an important source of allergens in the natural environment, and the cause of the appearance of symptoms of allergic disease in hypersensitive individuals. In our laboratory, we monitor 60 types of pollen of various allergenic potential, and publish the results of measurements from different phytogeographical areas in Slovenia. Data on daily concentrations, together with many years of experience, are the basis for making short-term forecasts about pollen air pollution.
8 – 15 April 2026
In warmer weather, pollen levels have increased significantly. In the lowlands, birch and related hornbeam pollen loads will be high. Additionally, the air will contain related allergens from oak and beech, with overall loads expected to be moderate.
Ash pollen will still be present in the air, but the highest concentrations are behind us. The plane tree season is underway, with high pollen loads expected in urban areas where these trees are commonly planted. Pollen from the cypress/yew family, willow, walnut, and maple will also be present.
In the coastal region, pollen loads of both hornbeam and hop-hornbeam will be high, with locally high concentrations of plane tree pollen. The main oak season has begun, pollen loads will be moderate. Only small amounts of birch pollen will be present, most of which is transported from inland areas by the wind. The air will also contain pollen from ash, beech, cypress, pine, willow, and maple.
Locally, the first grasses have already started flowering; however, pollen concentrations remain low, so the risk for allergy sufferers is currently low.
