In accordance with the Health Services Act, we as a public service:
perform microbiological tests in the field of medical microbiology;
hold a collection of isolates of pathogenic micro-organisms for the purpose of epidemiological studies;
participate in the drawing up and harmonisation of monitoring programmes of national significance and sampling andtesting programmes within the framework of inspection in the field of water, food, materials, and products intended to come into contact with foods, infectious diseases, cosmetics, toys, general safety products, alcohol, tobacco, biocides, chemicals, plant protection products, soil, air, biological systems, the living environment, and other fields in accordance with separate regulations;
implement sampling and laboratory testing in the framework of monitoring programmes of national significance and perform inspection, including the preparation of reports, compliance, safety and risk assessments;
provide expert support in the procedures for the assessment of the impact of the environment on health;
perform the tasks of national reference laboratories, which include the introduction, validation, and accreditation of new methods of testing, and maintaining of reference strains and materials;
cooperate with the National Institute of Public Health (NIJZ) and transmit data for the purposes of the implementation of their duties;
participate in the working bodies of the official institutions at all levels;
participate in the comprehensive evaluation of safety and risk in contiguous areas of the living environment and other users of the area;
perform the activities of a mobile ecological unit in the environmental field;
provide professional services to the competent ministries and inspectorates;
participate in development and professional activities in the field of the environmental health information system;
inform and raise the awareness of the public, and report in accordance with separate regulations;
implement pedagogic and scientific research, and educational work in the field of our activities.
In accordance with the Medicinal Products Act, we:
perform the official testing of quality of medicinal products.
In accordance with the Pharmacy Practice Act, we:
perform the official testing of galenic medicinal products.
In accordance with the Restriction on the Use of Tobacco Products and Related Products Act, we:
perform tasks in accordance with this Act (analysing and publishing data on tobacco products, e-cigarettes, and refillable containers, sampling, reviewing measurements and compliance assessments).
At its 19th regular session on 25 July 2013, the Government of the Republic of Slovenia adopted the Decision on the Establishment of the National Laboratory of Health, Environment and Food (NLZOH). According to this government decision, all regional Institutes of Public Health ceased to exist on the day of the establishment of the NLZOH.
