Mobile Unit of the Ecological Laboratory

The Mobile Unit of the Ecological Laboratory (MEEL) operates within our laboratory (under contract with the Ministry of Defence) and, in the event of activation, performs field chemical and biological testing and measurements in the event of accidents involving dangerous substances and other major pollutions of the living environment, carries out detection and identification of chemical, biological or other sources of threat arising from accidents involving dangerous substances or other accidents, and carries out laboratory chemical and biological testing and measurements in the event of natural or other disasters.

Who makes up MEEL?

MEEL is comprised of eight two-member KE-BI teams and the Head of MEEL. Individual KE-BI teams are on standby from Monday to the next Monday.

When is MEEL activated?

In the event of an accident, MEEL can be activated by the National Notification Centre. The KE-BI team receives a call to two pagers and is thus activated. The team reports to 112 and is briefed about the accident (type of accident, location of the accident, head of intervention).

They head out to the NLZOH, prepare the vehicle with the necessary equipment for sampling and analysis depending on the type of the accident and leave for the accident site. There, the team is briefed about the situation by the head of the intervention and starts with measurements and sampling so as to identify dangerous substances and determine the extent of the spread of these substances into the environment. After measurement and sampling, the head of the intervention is briefed on the findings and, where appropriate, the team proposes measures to mitigate the consequences of the accident. Further analyses of samples, if necessary, are carried out in the laboratory and, if necessary, the head of the intervention is briefed on the findings.

Remedying the consequences of an accident does not fall under the activity of MEEL.
